“…must be a great relief to you.”
Nick paused in the doorway of the inn when he heard voices from the parlor. Charlotte and the other ladies were still at their tea. He debated whether he should ease back out of the building or attempt the stairs up to the room he was sharing with Beresford.
“It was indeed.” Nick recognized Charlotte’s voice at once. “I vow, I don’t know how I would have endured the rest of our stay if business hadn’t forced him to return to London.”
Nick frowned, then doffed his hat and leaned into a dark corner to listen with being seen.
“Your stay thus far must have been very uncomfortable.” The voice was unfamiliar, but full of sympathy—likely Lady Easton.
“I’ll admit he didn’t do or say anything terribly untoward.” That was Lady Lethbridge. “But I found his presence rather oppressive.”
