Chapter 65

“She’s so cheerful that at first I thought it must be a pretense, before I knew of her situation. For it’s easy for a young lady to be cheerful when she’s made a sensation and everyone is waiting on her, but by the time we were dancing at the second ball I realized that it was her true character. She’s so lighthearted herself that she rarely speaks ill of anyone, even though I knew there were some people she didn’t care for. Once I learned of your situation, I realized how difficult it must have been for her to keep up such a pleasing countenance. Despite her lightheartedness, I know she feels things deeply.”
