Chapter 43

“They’re trying to ice the kicker. Poor kid, he’s a freshman and in the game of his life. Can you imagine the pressure?” the second announcer asked.

The cameras panned through the crowd. Fans on both sides of the ball were praying. Some had their eyes closed and fingers crossed. The players on both sidelines were on a knee, holding hands.

“Please, please, please,” Frank whispered.

The teams came back to the line of scrimmage. Just as the ball was snapped, a yellow flag flew through the air. Frank held his breath as he watched the referee confer with his fellow officials, then walk to the side and face the camera.

“Off side, Michigan, five yard penalty, repeat fourth down,” the striped official said. There was a collective groan that ran through the crowd in Chrysler arena. The penalty put the kicker five yards closer.

Once again the two teams lined up. “Well, that gives Alabama a better chance, but it’s still outside Taylor’s range,” the first announcer commented.
