Chapter 16

“Midnight?” he asked.

“No idea.” I answered.

“You sure you’re not hungry?” Ned got up and served himself another helping, “I made a shitload.”

I shook my head. “I’m gonna go outside. You eat.”

I left the table and pushed the sliding screen door open. The full weight of the night hit me. It was beautiful out, warm and fragrant with the smell of the weeping cherry tree in bloom. It was almost glowing in the light of the full moon that hung in the sky. How small we were under its massive eye. I stared up at the night sky, awed by its dark expanse. The effort to distract my thoughts was no use. I turned back and saw Ned looking anxious with a plate of spaghetti and meatballs in front of him.

“Why don’t you eat that while watching some television?” I suggested, but Ned didn’t budge. I walked to the edge of the deck, sat down and stared into the dark mass of trees. I knew my daughter was coming home.
