Chapter 8

“Everything looks really good,” the doctor said. He had a warm, pleasant voice. “Josie will most likely sleep for most of the day. But if she does wake up, and she seems confused, don’t worry. It’s completely normal with a head injury. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s missing hours or days prior to the accident. Short-term memory loss is very common in these cases.”

“Is it possible she’s lost more memory than that?” Zack’s voice was tight. I rubbed a little against his thigh, hoping to calm him.

“I doubt it,” Dr. Bradford said matter-of-factly. “While it can happen, I did get her to answer a few questions for me. She knows her name and the year. She told me her favorite thing to do is knit. She squeezed my fingers when I asked. She’s very lucky. I really do think she’s going to be just fine.”
