“Boy used to strut around like he had something to show off, back when he was little. I started calling him peacock and it just sort of stuck. Annoys the piss out of him now, of course.” Josie waved her free hand dismissively, and the IV line flapped with her motion. “Never mind that. Now, tell me. Why did you really come?”

“You were hurt, honey. I needed to be here.” It was the truth, and she knew it. But she knew me well enough to know there was more to the story. She waited, her blue gaze sharp and assessing, and finally I caved, just like we both knew I would. “When I called him, he just… He sounded lost and broken, Josie. I just needed to be here. For you both.”

“And you wonder why I adore the holy hell out of you?” she grumbled, settling back into her pillow. “How’s he doing now? Really?”
