“Solid I guess.” She tossed the tissue on the table. “In the last year, Lei’s been doing a little better. And then Kelly got pregnant and that kind of threw us all back into the emotional maelstrom.”

“Lei’s been trying so hard to be there for Louie, but we all know he’s hurting and thinking Gordon’s gonna lose his special place and—” but she stopped, too choked up to speak.
To hell with active listening. She needed a friend. I pulled her into my arms.
“It’s a boy,” she said, her voice muffled against my shirt. “It’s so fucking bittersweet.”
I held her for a while, letting her sadness under my usual guard. My own eyes were filling with tears. It surprised me. I immediately leaned away and resumed my empathetic posture.
Lou didn’t seem to notice the change. She sniffled and was quiet for a moment. Then she stared at me. “Why were you looking him up? You have a crush on him or something?”
