“Something tells me you’ve been used before,” he said, after a while. “You too, in so many ways, keep your guard up.” He slid the tip of his finger along my cheek. “With humor.”

“Maybe…”

His eyes lingered on my lips. “Come here,” he said quietly, pulling me close. “I do desire you, Micah. I do.” He stroked my hair. “More than you know. More than I let it show.”

I felt so good inside his arms. I didn’t dare ask for more.

“And you’re so patient. So generous.” Lei sounded drowsier. He was going to fall asleep. “I’m pushing my luck with you, I just know it.” He rested his arm on my waist, feeling heavier against me. He was slowly going under. “But I can’t allow myself to feel that deep,” he mumbled. “Or I’ll lose my mind.”

I raised my head to look up at him. His eyes were closed, jumping under their lids. I gently pressed my lips to his forehead. “It’s okay, Wilhelm,” I whispered, lying back down. “We’re in deep enough.”17
