There was a long pause, and then Lei said, “Only if you’re there with me.”
I froze, joy and pride bursting like firecrackers inside my heart.
“Would that—would that be too much to ask of you?” He sounded so insecure. “Because the thing is, I don’t have it in me to say goodbye to you anymore.”
“I’d go anywhere with you,” I whispered, knowing it was the truth.
“You could study. Online. Get your bachelor’s in Philanthropic Management or something.”
“You knew then. About Good Ear sinking.”
“Yes…I figured it out and I’m sorry.” He stroked my hair again. “I’m really sorry. I know it meant a lot to you. But if I’m on Broadway, I’ll be making around two thousand dollars a week. You understand what that means for us?”
“American dollars, right?”
He pinched my side. “New York is expensive, but still, we could make do. Both of us have been broke so this will be a big step up.”
“But, Lei, you’re asking me to be your kept boy.”
