I tried to be cool, to let him have his moment, but a surge of pure joy shot through me and I lunged at him, grabbing his shoulders. “Oh, my fucking God!” I yelled, laughing and shaking him a little.

He was pale, his eyes haunted with visions and ideas I couldn’t even guess at. Then he looked at me, really looked at me, and smiled. “Ha,” he scoffed, his cheeks flushing pink.

I knew what that ha, meant. They’d been teasing him, testing him, doubting him, making him jump through hoops, treating him like an amateur, but now they were about to get a shot of reality. Lei was going to make them eat their words. I could see it right there in his flaming black eyes.

“I need to get to work,” he said, already walking away, his black robe swinging behind him like a cape.

“Yep.” I watched him, grinning from ear to ear.

He stopped by our bedroom door and gave me a deep, adoring look. “This is because of you, you know that right?”
