“I wish I had comfort, at least, in knowing what became of her.” Samuel put his hand over his heart.

“You soon will,” Jefferson promised him.

“For her mind and heart, poor Jane, must never have been at rest here on Earth.”

“Those struggles go on in our time, Samuel,” I said. “But things are better, maybe. I hope they’re better for some.”

“They’re better,” Carrie said.

I relayed that, and then took Samuel’s hand. “If Jefferson says we can bring Jane here for you, it will happen. Jefferson never lies. I’m betting you’ll learn that Jane is living in Heaven, her mind and heart at peace, now, living however she wishes, possibly looking forward to your reunion as we speak.”

“That, for me, would also be Heavenly, sir.”

“Call me Patrick.”

“Patrick, I shall.”
