I need you to be true. You’re the only honest man I’ve ever known.
“Damn it,” I said, forgetting I wasn’t alone in the Frontier.
“What’s the matter?” Bowles asked, walking up to the counter.
“No, nothing.” I was impatient and annoyed. Why was Lewis being so dramatic again? I wasn’t the onlyhonest man he’d ever known, just saner than most of his so-called friends, I supposed.
“Here. Keep the change.” Sheriff Bowles dropped a twenty on the counter. “Is the kid giving you any trouble?”
“Donnie? No, not at all.” I frowned, forgetting Lewis for a second. How much did Bowles know about Donnie and what had happened at school? “Why do you ask?”
Sheriff Bowles looked over his shoulder at Annie who was reading the paper at the table, then back at me. “Well, Mrs. Lambert, your neighbor, complained about him riding his bike up and down your street late at night.”
