Chapter 39

Cameron woke. The symbol on the tree seemed to blaze before his eyes, every time he blinked. What was it, anyway? What was so special about it?

Whatever it was, it was evil. He could feel that much. He didn’t need the dreams to tell him that. Some kind of an urge gripped him to go out, climb the tree, and spill his own blood onto the symbol, but he ignored it. He was pretty sure where it was coming from, and he was pretty sure where it would lead. He had plenty of practice ignoring urges and desires that weren’t going to go in his best interests.

He got into his running clothes and went out for his usual workout. He didn’t get very far when he picked up on Jason’s presence. He stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and turned around. “Go home.”
