Chapter 41

He heard footsteps behind him. When he turned around, he saw Jason, climbing up into the dark attic behind him. “What are you doing?” he asked.

“Like hell I’m letting you go up in there by yourself.” Jason waved a hand. “Get a move on, I hate these ladders.”

“Do you think that I’m some kind of porcelain doll that’s going to shatter if I go up into the scary attic all alone?” Cameron rolled his eyes and climbed up. “Go back and watch old Brady Bunchreruns, or whatever it is you do all day.”

“The attic’s more interesting. I think I’ll head up there.” Creaking on the stairs told Cameron that Jason was still following him.

Cameron emerged into the attic. He’d been up here once when he took possession of the house and hadn’t come up here since then. Catherine had locked him up here once when he’d been about five, as punishment for some infraction while Grandpa had been out with David. Grandpa had been livid when he came back.
