“You need to wake up,” the woman cried, still not turning around.
“No, not until I see you.”
“You need to wake up,” she continued.
After what seemed like an eternity, Carlos was near the woman. He placed his hand on her shoulder and attempted to turn her around. He almost got a glimpse of her face, but a loud banging noise shook him out of his dream.
“Eugenio, hurry!” a man’s voice shouted from outside the door. “It’s the stable. It’s on fire.”
Eugenio bolted up and threw on his jeans and shoes, then ran outside to see what was going on. Carlos got up as well and ran right behind him after getting fully dressed. The flames could be seen the moment he left Eugenio’s room. The closer he got, the more he also felt the heat coming from the fire. The other men were doing their best to keep it from spreading.
“The horses—did anyone get them out?” Eugenio asked frantically.
