Still, Dakota knew he could use some help. Straightening his back, he opened the door the rest of the way and walked slowly into the room, pulling the oxygen tank behind him. “What’s going on?” he asked as though he didn’t hear every word of the conversation. The tension in the room could be cut with a knife.

“Lanie wants to go find Adelaide Price in Louisiana,” Terrell explained slowly, glaring at his cousin. “She wants to go now. But your health is a lot more important.”

“Ahh.” Dakota smiled wickedly at Eleanor before taking a seat at the room’s desk.

She wrinkled her nose at him and narrowed her eyes. “You’d stop Terrell from helping the family?”

“Lanie!” Terrell shouted. “You know that’s not what’s happening here. I think you should go.”

She reared her head back in anger and clicked her heels together. “What, you’re gonna kick me to the curb, too?”

“Just go, Lanie. Before you burn the only bridge you have left.”
