Chapter 98

Dakota’s internal reaction was much the same as her outward one. He couldn’t raise a child by himself, could he? Most days, he could barely take care of his own needs, and Kenna was no ordinary ten-year-old. She had deep-rooted emotional problems that might manifest in any number of issues, including throwing beer bottles and other violent behavior. She was also a sweet girl, and he loved her like she was his own kid. But because of that, Dakota knew he was not good enough. Not on his own. She needed so much more than he could give her.

But Terrell didn’t seem fazed. “Look, we have to do this. There’s no way around it. If you think you can do better than my aunt, then be my guest. If it gets too much, then just drop her off there. But you’re right. We can’t bring a kid with us. You have my number. You can call if there are any problems. Otherwise, you and I, we’re done, Dakota.”
