Chapter 104

It might actually work.

Stopped at a red light, he called back to Kenna with a jovial tone. “Hey, Ken, what do you say we go visit my sister? We’re pretty close to her house.”

He heard small footsteps as she wandered up to him and sat down in the passenger seat. Like a good parent, he pointed toward the seatbelt, and she put it on. “You have a sister?”

“Mm-hmm. Nice lady. Lives with her husband and her baby. I’m sure they’d love to meet you.”

“Why would they want to meet me?”

He forced himself to laugh. In reality, the question saddened him deeply. A girl that age shouldn’t question her own worth like that, he thought. Hell, he didn’t want her to do it at all, but especially not this early. “Because they’re good people, and my sister loves kids. And when we were growing up, she had a hugestuffed animal collection, just like yours. She likes reading, too.” He, Kenna, and Hope all had that in common. “I’m sure you two would have plenty to talk about.”
