He didn’t like leaving Kenna with his sister, even though he knew it would be fine. If he could trust anyone, he could trust Hope, and she and Kenna were folding laundry when he left.

Part of him still worried there could be another bad guy lurking out there, waiting to get at her. The mysterious boss, maybe. And she couldn’t wear any defensive talismans. With the warm weather and her adoration of summer dresses, there could be no hiding a necklace that glowed perpetually, and wearing them openly would make Kenna an easier target. He had no interest in explaining the magic rocks to his sister, either.

Dakota’s caution didn’t extend to himself, however. He always wore his all-defense necklace. Always. In fact, he didn’t even like taking it off for a few minutes. And there could be little wonder why. He started to feel lightheaded, shaky, and even a little nauseous when it was removed.
