The way she was always trying to stick up for him, you’d think she was the older one, but no, she was two years younger than Charlie. He’d been bullied a lot as a child and she had become his biggest champion. When things got really bad in high school, he’d decided to drop out, and his mom had been so ashamed, she barely spoke to him again. He’d often wondered, if his mother had taken the time to help him—perhaps get him a tutor, talk to the school, anything—would he have been able to graduate? Would support and love have made a difference? He wasn’t stupid—he already knew the answer to that question. But dwelling on “what ifs” wasn’t good for anyone.
Still, if he’d had help to stop the bullying he’d endured in school, perhaps things would be different for him now.
