Chapter 21

His phone rang and he hoped it was Melissa telling him the concert was canceled.

“Hello?” he answered wearily without looking at the caller ID.

“Charlie?”

He sat up straight and ran his hand through his messy hair. “Owen?”

“I just wanted…to say ‘hi,’ I guess.” Owen sounded nervous.

Warmth spread through his chest. “I’m glad you called.”

“I debated, actually. Didn’t want to sound clingy,” he said with a nervous laugh.

Charlie smiled. Owen could cling to him as much as he wanted to. “I would never think that.”

“Uncle Charlie!” Nathan screamed as he ran into the living room. “I’m Superman,” he hollered just before lunging himself onto Charlie’s lap.

“Ung,” Charlie grunted. “Whoa there, little man.”

Nathan giggled and hugged him before climbing down.

“Um, did I call at a bad time?”

“I’m watching my nephew today. But, no, you didn’t call at a bad time.” Charlie grinned. “Why, teacher? You checking to see if I’m studying?”
