Chapter 23

Janice looked confused, but Alex said, “I get those feelings sometimes. I’ll take you; you’ll see it’s nothing, the kids are fine, nobody’s breaking into your house, or whatever, and we’ll be right back.”

“I don’t know why this is happening or why I said that,” I muttered on the way to the parking lot. “It’s just—the valium, and my jack-knife and the watch and my sister…I’m probably crazy, and Garth and Simon and…all that joy and laughter.”

Alex just looked at me, “Never mind; if you’re staying here in town, you’ll know in just a few minutes. Calm down, whatever’s going on, if anything, we’ll handle it. I’m a fireman. It’ll be okay.” He squeezed my arm. “You look familiar,” he added, “although I wasn’t in this school very long, maybe I was in some classes with you. We just moved here when I was a senior. My adoptive father passed away, and my mom wanted to be nearer her own family.”
