Mrs. Connor had begged out of the trip, blaming exhaustion and frailty, although she had given both Lyle and her husband a pointed look and suggested they take a pass of the George Washington University. “I think Lyle would be interested in seeing it.”

Mr. Connor had been pleased with the idea, neither Randy nor Vaughn seemed suspicious of it, and Lyle had to admit that the place looked cool as all hell—powerful and impressive and pretentious. Lyle had absolutely no doubt that nothing he’d ever done in his life would be worthy enough to get him beyond those wrought-iron gates, but it sure was cool to dream about the possibility. Of all the places they’d seen, it was the one he filed most securely in his memory banks.
