“It’s weird though, it feels like I’ve known him my whole life. And out of everyone in this entire city, he was the one I found. I just walked and walked and there he was, as if he’d been the one I’d been walking toward the whole time, and I hadn’t known it until I saw him.”

“What does he do?”

Pictures flipped by in Lyle’s head—recollections of Arius and Mrs. Connor and the things they’d said—and he grabbed at them as they went by. “He’s a student. At that university we saw yesterday. I forget exactly what he said he was studying. Something about history. He didn’t talk about it much.”

Vaughn nodded. “Interesting.”
