Chicago 1982 is a goldmine for the construction industry, and Eric and his two business partners are thriving. Once living as struggling orphans in a Catholic boys' home, they've overcome poverty and abuse to obtain success. Faith, love, honesty, and hope: These things don’t belong solely to organized religion. God, Christ, Allah, Great Mother, Great Spirit, whomever it is you might call Them, are not owned by any church. There is God in every moment of love, peace, and joy; divinity can shine from the eyes of every man, woman, and child if they choose to let it.


God—my version, their version, any version He might be seen in—is not the reason that I hurt, or want, or fail or succeed, or stay stationary. He did not let us down as boys…man did.


And yet, at the same time, a man helped me see the Light all over again. It didn’t come with church bells, hymns, or Bible verses either. It came with a smile and a willingness to love me in spite of my wrongdoings.
