Chapter 47

“His name is Mark,” Gerry snapped. “Mark Devon. Not Maxx. Maxx Starlight is nothing but a character Mark plays. You want to take Maxx from me, I couldn’t care less. Take him. Bag him up and throw him in the trash and I won’t think twice about it.” He stepped closer, both hands tightening into fists. “But if you think for one damn second that I’ll let you come between Mark and I, then you are crazier than I think you are!”

The room around them began to grow quiet. Even the album playing on the stereo hit the end of the final recording, and nothing but the sound of the needle making its way over dead space echoed through the speakers. No one rushed to change it. No one even moved.

Gerry didn’t lower his voice. If they heard, they heard. “Mark is not your fucking puppet. You don’t control him anymore than you control me. He’s made a huge name for himself, and he’ll continue to be huge with or without you. Maybe you’re the one with the redundant talents.”
