“Has he changed?” Gerry asked in a voice so quiet it could have been a whisper. He turned his eyes back in her direction and watched her eyebrow rise up her forehead again.
“You adored him just the way he was. You don’t want him to have changed, love. You just want him to have opened up his eyes.”
Gerry opened his mouth to counter the thought and closed it just as quickly. Was that what he wanted? He’d told his boss that he needed to look into Mark’s eyes. That he needed to see whose eyes would be looking back. Mark was never the problem. Maxx was. Had Mark finally set aside the Maxx mask for real? Or was Mark just wearing another one on top of the first?
“Are you ready then?” Deidre stood and held out her hand.
He didn’t stand immediately. Instead, he lifted his eyes and stared at her. “You knew I was here, didn’t you?”
“No.” She shook her head as if to emphasize her reply. Then she smiled. “But I knew you would be one day. I’ve been waiting.”
