Recently docked after a voyage abroad, Emmett wants only to find a warm bed and good food, for himself and the cabin boy he's taken into his care. Those plans are impeded, however, by an altercation in the streets -- with a man he realizes too late is England's heir to the throne, Prince Andrewe.<br><br>When the encounter unexpectedly leads to a position in the royal household attending the prince, Emmett is not certain what to think. On one hand, it's a reliable income and ensures the safety of his charge. On the other, it's neither the life Emmett knows, nor an environment that he's comfortable in. Emmett closed his eyes. Each syllable pierced him like a blade. “We have both had such moments, your Highness. I can only ask the same request that you asked of me.” Emmett opened his eyes and turned to face Andrewe. “Forgive me.”


Andrewe frowned. “Your life was never at stake with the mistakes that I have made.”


“No,” Emmett agreed. “Only my soul was. But you think that so less a value than your life? Perhaps that is our issue then?”


Andrewe’s jaw tightened. “How can you even say that? If I cared so little for your soul I would not have stepped up to save you—”


Emmett sighed. “I do not wish to disrespect you, your Highness. But in all fairness, you have never sought to prove your affections to me.”


“I told you…I told you that you made me love you. Is that not enough of a disclosure for you?” Andrewe struggled to swallow. “It is more than I have heard from you.”
