“Madre mia! Did you see it?”
“See it?” Alejandro shook his head. “See what? My friend and I were taking a walk from the hotel, we heard you shout out. We thought you must have had an accident. There was no one else. What do you thinkyou saw?”
“Uh…I saw…” The man frowned and glanced from Alejandro to Ryker.
“Did you see one of the wild dogs we’ve been warned about?” Ryker asked and then basked in Alejandro’s smile. “I thought I heard a dog.”
“A wild dog.” The man spoke slowly, his gaze still flitting between them, then he nodded. “Yes. Of course. A wild dog.” The man gave a nervous laugh and accepted Alejandro’s hand to get to his feet.
“We’ll walk you home, so you have some company.” Alejandro patted the man’s shoulder. “You’ll be a little shaken up after your fall. Then we can go back to the hotel.”
“No, no.” The man made a token protest, but even Ryker could see his heart wasn’t in it.
“It’s no trouble.” Ryker assured the man. “And we’d feel happier knowing you were home.”
