“Shut up,”he said mentally.
“He speaks truth. And you know it.”
God help him. Lou took a breath and asked, “How could you prove it?”
George rose and pulled Lou to his feet. “I’ll show you. Come down to the water’s edge with me.”
What were they going to do? Swim to another world? More likely drown. “Let’s go back to the house. I’d rather make love again than find out any more about what’s wrong with you.”
George laughed. “You always said I was too hung up on sex, that I didn’t study as much as I should, that I wasn’t ambitious enough.”
Lou edged backwards toward the dunes. “That doesn’t sound like me. I love sex. I’d fuck every day if I could…”
George grasped his forearm. “If what?”
Lou pulled free. “If nothing.”
“If you could be yourself? If you didn’t have to hide behind that fake exterior you created for yourself?”
