Chapter 82

“I’m almost certain that Lee is still alive,” Chance said, calming somewhat after a large swallow of coffee. “Why Morleigh is keeping him alive is beyond me.” That was an outright lie. After seeing what Morleigh considered entertainment, he had some idea of why the man might keep Leander alive, but he couldn’t bear to dwell on that possibility for too long.

“Well, I don’t know that it matters whyhe’s kept alive,” Kit said, absently taking the cup of coffee Daisy handed him. “So long as he is.”

“It might have something to do with money,” Chance added, hoping what he said was true. “Nearly everything that damnable—beg pardon, Daisy—snake does seems to have something to do with money. Tonight he kept asking me about Lee’s money from the ship, about what would happen to the money if Lee was never found, or if he was dead.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That you were holding it for him until he was found, and that if he died the money would probably come to me.”
