“That’s ridiculous.” Dickinson snorted. “Fine. It’ll do. All right. Keep that man safe, trust no one. Absolutely nothing else matters, do you understand me?”

“Absolutely, sir. I won’t let you down.” Ben ignored the way his pulse throbbed in his neck. Fear was part of the daily life of an agent. He had plenty of practice ignoring it.

“I know you won’t. That’s why I sent you in the first place, Kellogg. No matter what happens, that man is your top priority.” Dickinson hung up.

Ben stared at his phone for a long minute. Lennon’s hesitant touch on his shoulder shook him out of it. “You okay?” Lennon asked him, face even paler than normal.

Ben looked up at Lennon. “I don’t know.” He couldn’t lie to Lennon, not now. He’d made a promise. He was going to be honest with his love. In this case, it related directly to Lennon’s safety. Lying would compromise Ben’s mission, and it would hurt Lennon. “I think things just went from bad to worse.”
