There was no point in responding to that.

“Now that the boy’s a lawyer, he and his family of them will probably try to sue us for more retroactively.”

Legal eagles perched on many a branch on the Keller family tree.

“Doubtful. If he is a lawyer, he’d just be starting out,” I reminded my father. “I wish you could be nicer, no matter what he is.”

“I wish Mackensie Keller hadn’t broken your heart.”

I stared at my old man. He stared at his grungy work boot down on the brake. “He didn’t…” I couldn’t claim Mickey hadn’t broken my heart, not when my father had been right there to see the fallout.

“After all these years, you still have that look,” he said with a shake of his head.

“What look?”

“The doofus in love look.” Pops crossed his eyes and made a fishy kissy face at me in the rearview mirror.

“I don’t look like that!”
