“All right, so you don’t turn yourself in,” he conceded. “So tell me what we’re going to do next. We don’t have a lot of time.”

He pulled to a stop behind a beat-up Corvair, waiting for the light to turn green. His fingers drummed along the wheel as he waited for Eli’s response, seconds ticking by interminably.

“You’re right,” Eli said. “I don’t have a lot of time.”

The sound of the door unlatching jerked Jarrett’s attention away from the light. He turned his head to see Eli climbing out. “What are you doing?”

When he tried to grab Eli and pull him back in, Eli danced out of his reach. “I’m sorry I got you into this mess.”
