The moment she turned on her heels and headed back up the stairs, John turned his eyes back to Parker. “You can’t be here. You’ll get swarmed. You’ve said what you needed to say, and I’ve replied how I felt I needed to, and there’s nothing left for you to do but go home and—”

“Give me another chance,” Parker said, dropping the charade and reaching for John’s hand. “I swear on everything I believe in that I will make it worth your while.”

John laughed. “I should just forgive you?”

“Yes.” Parker’s expression softened into a smile. “Forgive me. I’d like that. Show me this world of yours. Make me believe in romance. Give us both a happy ending.”

“I can’t.” John used the firmest voice he could manage.

“You will,” Parker insisted. He lifted John’s hand to his mouth and kissed the back of it. “If it’s the last thing I do, John, you will.” 13
