A young woman who seemed barely old enough to be out of college took his statement, forcing him to repeat everything he had told McKendree downstairs. She asked more pointed questions than the inspector had, though mercifully, only those meant to expound on the details he’d already provided. Ian went through the process, taking his time to ensure he said nothing that would make matters worse. He was anxious to find out what had happened to Lucas, but he could only ask once he was done.
As it turned out, he didn’t have to.
The stairwell door opened again. Ian only glanced over out of reflex, but the sight of Lucas following McKendree into the room had him sitting up noticeably straighter, enough for Simm, the constable taking his report, to pause.
“That your friend?” she asked.
