“We kind of already had part of it,” she said. She traced swirls in the sweat that clung to his chest before yielding to the urge to lean forward and lick the same path. “It helps that you let me read you. Gideon said you would, but I wasn’t so sure.”

“Because of what I said last week?” Jesse sighed. “I didn’t want you to read me because I was feeling jealous and hateful and…conflicted. I wasn’t proud of that.”

“Of Ethan? But why didn’t you ever say anything?”

Jesse pressed his lips against her forehead and sighed softly. “Because I didn’t think I was in love with you, or could be. And then Gideon forced me out of my denial, but after that I realized that…you deserved somebody who could offer you more than I could. A future, a family, a normal life. None of that is in the cards here.”
