Chapter 80

Gideon didn’t offer a hand to help him as he led the way to the kitchen, though he kept an ear cocked in case Jess ended up needing it. “Emma’s probably out for the night,” he said as he dug through the cupboards for the coffee and the filters. “So you really didn’t cook up this little plan with her?” At the shake of Jesse’s head, he added, “Then why was she here tonight?”

Jesse hesitated before muttering, “I told her to come by.” He looked up and added, “I had hoped we’d have something to celebrate tonight.”

The reminder of the disaster at the cemetery had both of them falling silent. As diverting as the interlude with Emma had been, all it had done was taken the edge off Gideon’s frustration. He still hated the fact that they’d been thwarted, and worse, caged like animals and forced to watch as the very thing they’d tried to stop took place anyway. On top of that, the mage stealing John’s power was even stronger now. It was only going to get harder and harder to stop him in time.
