“Twice a day we drive…drove…out to the shelter we rescued Ginger from, to spend a couple of hours. I’ve walked up to seven dogs at one time. They need to get out. Miss Kitty would sit with the cats.”
“Oh. I…I don’t really know if I’m a cat person,” Del said.
I knew.
“Well, it’s more about whether the cats are people cats. They’ll let you know if they want your attention. It’s something I plan on doing as long as I’m here.”
Stop talking like you’re going somewhere, Baily. You’re not going anywhere.
“I’d take every one of them home if I could,” he said. “This is the next best thing. I go back in the evening and walk them all again.”
“Why don’t you have more pets? Why didn’t Grandmother?”
“It might be the only thing we ever disagreed on. Miss Kitty thought Ginger would be happier as an only child.”
There is something to be said for always being the center of attention.
“He doesn’t seem to mind the animals at the shelter, though.”
