Chapter 25

“M’row.”

“You want to sing?”

Baily had a beautiful, silky voice. I enjoyed his singing. When Del joined in, I thought of that phrase I’d once heard about the squeaky wheel not falling far from the tree. The mood had been somewhat somber for all before the music began, which was to be expected. Now, people were festive and celebratory, which I knew in my feline heart Katherine would have liked. I, on the other hand, being a cat, found it a bit too loud, and so I retreated to the mud porch, to check on my food bowls.

“Time to hit the road.” When Baily came out my way for his boots, around the time the mantel clock struck seven, our sneaky recent roommate followed.

“I’m, uh, gonna stay back,” Del said.

“Really?”

“Yeah. I saw the way people looked at me when I tried to sing.”

“I bet they were reminded of Miss Kitty.” Baily brushed Del’s cheek but pulled away quickly. “Pleasantly so. We’d love to have you.”
