Chapter 7

“Go away, Justin.” I left him standing there. Soon enough he’d learn I’d broken up with Gary. Idly I wondered if he’d try to get back together with me.

As it turned out, he didn’t. He completed his classes early and left for Yale within a matter of weeks. It seemed since we were no longer together, his parents had decided to let him stay on this coast.

As for Gary, he didn’t believe I was serious when I said we were through because he’d fallen in love with me. “But girls want to hear that!”

“Has it escaped your notice that I’m not a girl?”

“But…But…”

He tried writing and calling, and I responded to neither, tearing up his letters and asking our house mother to inform him I wasn’t at home.
