Chapter 41

As I grew older, I learned boys didn’t marry boys. But they could have sex with each other

Something held me back, though, and I was eighteen before I acted on it.

I’d thought I was so clever, concealing my sexuality from my parents. As it turned out, they’d known almost as soon as Justin and I made love that first time. Years later, I learned Father and not Justin’s sister was the one who had informed Justin’s parents. Fortunately, it had been their own idea to send their son away from my influence. If Father had been behind that as well, it would have destroyed what relationship we had.

Shortly after the last time I saw Justin, after my onetime boyfriend left for a college out of state, the pressure began: I had to find a girl to date if I wanted to marry eventually and have a family.
