“Yes. I translated enough of them to realize Puksik’al Yakuntik was real, and what I was reading confirmed there was such a city.” He gripped my arm. “Fascinating, my young friend. Fascinating.”

Well, yes it was, but, “Carlos, why did you want me?”

“Eh? Have you looked in the mirror?”

“That’s not what I meant.” I could feel my cheeks burn up. “What does that have to do with lungfish?”

“Eh?” he repeated, looking puzzled.

“Your wire said something about lungfish. Mayan ruins aren’t exactly my area of expertise.” I blew out a breath. “I’m not an archaeologist. I’m not even a linguistics expert.” I knew some Latin, but Portuguese might as well be Greek to me, and as for Mayan…“I can’t help you translate the Mayan into English. Why did you want me on this expedition?”

“You have a degree in herpetology.”

“I thought you needed my expertise in lungfish.” This wasn’t getting us anywhere.
