“Thanks,” I said to Cristovao after he’d rowed me back to the main site. He grunted and rowed back to the Adelina, where he’d help Fabricio begin preparations for that evening’s meal. I strolled into the clearing where the opening in the rock wall was located. We’d discovered many caverns branched off it, and just then, the entire party stood outside it.

“Nothing! We’ve found nothing,” Sam shouted, and I dodged in the nick of time as the piece of rock he’d hurled went sailing past my ear.

“Hey!”

“Sorry.” But he didn’t sound it in the least. With each passing day, he’d become more and more desperate. “I didn’t sign on for this,” he snarled.

“What’s going on?” I asked Dinah.
