Chapter 89

“I thought I saw a shark—” Dinah was peering intently over the side at a series of ripples.

A shark? I swallowed and did a little peering myself, only to grin ruefully when she frowned and shook her head.

“However—”

Sam cut her off before she could complete her sentence. “But aren’t you tired, sweetness?” He stared at the place where whatever Dinah had seen had descended, and he shifted uncomfortably. “Don’t you want a bath and a hot meal? I mean, we just got here, and it’s been a long day. Wouldn’t you like to take a break? We can start first thing tomorrow morning.”

“I was about to say—”

“I’d like to speak with you, dearest.” Sam took her elbow in an outwardly solicitous gesture, but I could see the sudden flare of pain in her eyes.

I took a step toward them, but Dinah gave a slight shake of her head, signaling she wanted me out of it.
