At this point, the air tank on my back did me absolutely no good. It just weighed me down. I shrugged out of the straps and let the current take me.

My ears began ringing and black dots danced at the edge of my vision. Just a few more yards…The presence closed in on me rapidly—I could feel it—and like Lot’s wife, in spite of myself, I half-turned to look behind me. Vibrations rocked me, the marine equivalent of a roar, and then suddenly the water pressure altered. Whatever it was bearing down on me struck my head, and my world went black.

I groggily roused to consciousness to the feel of a steady pressure starting at my waist and worked up over my ribs and spine to my shoulders as artificial respiration was performed on me. Why was someone performing artificial respiration on me?
