Chapter 14

Missy grabbed a towel and got dressed in a hurry. She threw shit into boxes, as a friend had once described packing, and tossed them down the stairs where they rolled to the door. Ryan got dressed almost as fast, his heart pumping, but still he took time to take off Missy’s father’s shoes and lift him up onto the bed from the floor where he had passed out. He then helped himself to some nice shirts and cufflinks that he found in Tom’s room, which wasn’t so nice, but hey, everyone has faults, you know?

Danny helped Ada into the living room and laid her gently on the couch, covering her with her homemade afghan, a hideous thing in multiple shades of purple and olive green. He shuddered, then went back to taking, or to be honest, stealing food for their trip. He whistled merrily while he worked. Jack was already loading the car, trying to move carefully to avoid the pain from where he’d cut himself shaving, in the carpet area, if you know what I mean.
