Chapter 16

Stella didn’t like being reminded that if Jane hadn’t interfered, she’d still be working the streets outside the Saloon. Jane enjoyed holding things like that over people.

Luckily for Stella, it was arguable that she needed all of her fingers.

Jane was fastidiously cleaning her dagger, polishing it with a little cloth so it gleamed in the muted lamplight. Her coat was still covered in blood spatters, but she ignored these, eventually putting away her dagger in the drawer.

“Libby, darling. I think we need to discuss something.”

“Yes, miss.” His voice held no inflection.

“That Ranger is causing problems. The men I sent after him weren’t of the highest caliber, but losing ten of them at once is rather annoying. What I need to do is find out why he’s here. Legacy wouldn’t have sent him to this end of the universe for no reason.”

Jane started pacing back and forth, clasping her hands behind her back.
