“It’s safe and it’s closer. It’s bolted into concrete. Can withstand tornadoes, bombs, anything. It has a thirty-day supply of food and water.”
Lightning lit the sky long enough for Rainn to see the road was under half a foot of water. He felt lightheaded again. Keep it together
The Jeep fought uphill, a branch occasionally whipping the windshield. After a ten-minute battle, Sam turned off the road and parked.
Sam grabbed three backpacks and handed one to Rainn. “Can you walk about twenty paces?”
Safety was thatclose? “I think so.”
“Okay, push the door hard.”
Rainn shoved the door open, realizing how much stronger the wind was now than it had been when he’d pushed open his trailer door. The door tried its best to slam closed on Rainn’s arm. He knew he’d have a bad bruise later.
