Chapter 16

They drove in silence for about another ten minutes. On either side of the road, houses gave way to paddocks and lifestyle blocks.

“Horses on the left,” Nate said, “and goats on the right. Probably some sheep around here, too.”

“I thought New Zealand was full of sheep,” Rusty said, “but these are the first ones I’ve seen.”

“Shh, the abundance of sheep is an urban legend, but most tourists don’t know that. Nevertheless, I’m sure we’ll see some more soon. Can’t have you disappointed by the lack of sheep, right?”

As though on cue, Nate spotted a flock of white up ahead. He slowed down to a crawl as he approached, then stopped so the farmer could herd his sheep across the road.

“I obviously tempted fate.” Rusty sounded surprised. “Does this happen often?”

“Not all the time, but often enough.” Nate grinned. “We’ll just have to wait and let them pass. Shouldn’t take too long.”
